While forecasts for German GDP growth in 2019 have been reduced month by month in the first quarter of the year, consumer sentiment, as measured by the GfK Consumer Climate Index, remained at a high level. The labour market is healthy with high employment figures and a low unemployment rate of 5.1% as at the end of March, and firms report a lack of supply of candidates with the right talents. Retail sales in January and February 2019 were stronger than in January and February 2018.
